Noise and wear, particularly when going round bends, on wheels and rails from rail vehicles is a problem for operators and users. This problem can be solved with a modern wheel flange lubrication device.

The lubrication process has to satisfy the following requirements: capable of operating with environmentally friendly lubricants and materials, the lubricant needs to be applied precisely to ensure that no excess lubricant is deposited on the contact or braking surfaces, air consumption should be kept to a minimum; the system should comprise simple components for minimum maintenance.

The patented REBS wheel flange lubrication system

REBS developed the ‘One Tube System’ for wheel flange lubrication 25 years ago. That is able to spray a biodegradable environmentally friendly lubricant. This system is also suitable for solid lubricants since the TURBOLUB® distributors and nozzles contain no moving parts and is therefore not prone to clogging. The system’s successful application worldwide has meant that REBS has become a pioneer in wheel flange lubrication units.

The principle behind wheel flange lubrication

A pneumatically operated piston pump supplies the lubricant to a mixer unit. From here, it is transported into the patented TURBOLUB® distributors by compressed air and then on through two or more tubes directly into the fully adjustable nozzles.

When the oil-air mixture leaves the nozzles, approx. 50 mm3 of lubricant is dispersed in fine droplets for at least 6 seconds and sprayed onto the wheel flange, the wheel rotating several times during the process. Contact between the wheel and rail means that lubricant will naturally be transferred to the following wheels with dramatic reduction in wear and irritating noise. This lubrication system has been patented by REBS.

An additional problem due to the limited compressed air capacity available on -board the vehicle was solved by REBS with the introduction of cyclic lubrication. Where the lubricant is only sprayed on in cycles rather than continuously. In this context, the spraying cycles are deter-mined by distance or time or curve sensor. To meet this challenge, REBS developed the freely programmable ‘Rematic’ control system. REBS recommends time-dependent activation using a timer. This is a way of ensuring that less lubricant is applied on long straight sections of track because trains reach higher speeds here. As the train goes round bends, however, more lubricant is applied as track speed reduces.

The wheel flange lubrication system was designed from the onset for retrofitting and easy installation. A compact com-pressor control unit can also be supplied for compressed air supply.

Non-stop development and improvement ensure that the REBS wheel flange lubri-cation system is a cost-effective solution for rail vehicles which pays for itself very quickly. The systems are currently in-stalled on various rail vehicles including trams, underground trains, locomotives, DMU’s, EMU’s and also on high-speed trains
